Ex Leu 79, 31 October 2000, 723 and Leu 18, 5 May 1977, 244
Lot 112
SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos II Theos, 261-246 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.09 g, 12 h), Ephesos (?), circa 258-246. Diademed head of Antiochos II to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ANTIOXOY Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; in exergue, monogram. SC pl. 25, 543.1b (same obverse die). WSM 1487. A beautiful coin with a superb portrait and a particularly feminine rendering of Apollo. The reverse struck very slightly off center, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, ex Leu 79, 31 October 2000, 723 and Leu 18, 5 May 1977, 244.

If Newell's attribution of this lovely issue to Ephesos is correct, it dates to after 258 BC, when Antiochos II regained control of the city following an unsuccessful mutiny of the Ptolemaic co-regent Ptolemy Epigonos against his stepfather Ptolemy II.
